Central Islip
New Directions worked with the 1,400-home Lowell Avenue Neighborhood to develop a neighborhood profile in 1998-99. Faculty and students from NYIT and SUNY at Stony Brook participated. Three chapters were completed at that time: 1. Population and Housing, 1940-1990, 2. Physical Survey, and 3. Opinion Survey, 1998.

This information served as background for development of a shared vision and goals for the neighborhood, participatory program planning in cooperation with the Town of Islip Planning Department, Long Island Railroad, New York Institute of Technology, local businesses and others.
The first concrete results will be new sidewalks, drainage improvements, tree planting, a bicycle path, landscaping of the Central Islip railroad station, beautification of the eastern entrance to NYIT and other physical improvements of public areas.
A case study of the Circles of Hope process with the Lowell Avenue Civic Association is presented in the 12-page report, Claiming a Seat at the Table: How the Lowell Avenue Civic Association became a more effective voice for the neighbhorhood. See Library--Bookstore
